The University of Kansas Information Technology Enterprise Design and Construction unit is hiring a Senior Audiovisual Design Engineer and we are looking for candidates that want to work in a friendly, collaborative, and fast paced atmosphere. Our unit designs and installs the network and audiovisual infrastructure that provides critical services to the University. The ideal candidate is someone who likes to be challenged, solve problems, and enjoys helping find new ways to make the current status quo move forward. The duties of this position focus on the design/engineering, integration and support of audiovisual systems in a large-scale campus environment.
Under minimal supervision this position is responsible for the design/engineering, integration, implementation and operation of campus audiovisual infrastructure to meet requirements for audiovisual services. The Senior Audiovisual Design Engineer may develop and use advanced and innovative approaches to developing audiovisual solutions. Assignments require the application of standards and guidelines. Position requires skill, knowledge, conformance to established and benchmark systems engineering processes and the ability to effectively communicate technical analyses, design and project plans. Additionally, the Senior Audiovisual Design Engineer may supervise or provide leadership to staff. This position will coordinate with other internal units and university departments regarding design and implementation of the audiovisual infrastructure. This position does not require a scheduled on-call rotation.
30% - Create and review reports, construction drawings and construction specifications for the installation, implementation or modification of audiovisual systems and/or physical support for audiovisual systems. Work directly with customers, designers and contractors to identify scope of work, and resolve any questions concerning the interpretations of the reports, drawings, and/or specifications. Review preliminary and final drawings and specifications for construction work to determine compliance with University engineering practices, established best practices, standards, codes, and regulations. Make recommendations for acceptance or revisions. Prepare high level estimates and budgets for projects. Perform QA/QC review and approve estimates.
25% - Survey University audiovisual facilities for proposed building system repairs, replacements or new installations. Serve as a consultant to outsourced design team. Review and inspect projects during design, construction and upon completion to ensure compliance with contract plans, specifications, and to resolve technical difficulties. Assist in the development, maintenance, and enforcement of the University Division 27 Design and Construction Standards including best industry practices and procedures based on accepted industry standards, codes, and best practices. Follow campus safety guidelines and act as the steward for the University to ensure proper installation and maintenance of the structured cabling system and supportive infrastructure.
25% - Document University audiovisual infrastructure. Perform field surveys to gather existing conditions and documentation to aid and improve this existing documentation. Input documentation into database, geographical information system, or Microsoft Visio/AutoCAD as-built drawings.
10% - Research new technologies, devices, and installation processes to improve the performance and/or reduce cost of the university's audiovisual systems and supportive infrastructure. Research and develop technical data to evaluate audiovisual engineering environmental options relating to voice, video, control and display systems. Prepare reports for Management, which identify, substantiate and quantify the nature of problems and the appropriate recommendations for solution. Continuous research and evaluation is required in this position to manage and recommend resource needs and processes.
10% - During construction, perform periodic on-site inspections of the installation for assigned projects. Work directly with customers, project management and contractor to identify and provide guidance to correct deficiencies with the installation related to building code or KU IT Standards. Prepare punch-lists at defined stages of construction, provide to the contractor and verify items have been corrected.
The Senior Audiovisual Design Engineer is responsible for complying with departmental policy relating to security. This includes key security, vehicle security, controlling access to secure areas and data security. In addition, the Senior Audiovisual Engineer:
Handles sensitive data - This position is authorized to handle sensitive or confidential data in accordance with established procedures in the performance of job duties.
High School Diploma/GED and seven (7) years of relevant professional experience or an Associate’s degree and five (5) years of relevant professional experience or a Bachelor’s degree and three (3) years of relevant professional experience. Relevant professional experience my include design, integration and installation of audiovisual systems.
Proficiency in AutoCAD as evidenced by at minimum three (3) years of experience using AutoCAD to create construction drawings and audiovisual system documentation.
Familiarity with industry best practices and standards such as TIA, BICSI, NFPA 70 and 72, InfoComm, IEEE, ADA.
Three (3) years of experience of AV equipment and manufacturers such as Crestron, Extron, Panasonic, Biamp.
Three (3) years of experience with Crestron and Extron control systems.
Three (3) years of experience creating budgetary estimates for audiovisual systems.
Strong written communication skills as evidenced by the application materials.
InfoComm CTS-D certification.
Bachelor’s degree and five (5) years of relevant professional experience.
Formal training and certifications from Crestron, Extron, Biamp, etc.
Experience in Revit
Experience with EASE
Experience using Trimble Accubid estimating software
Ability to read and understand construction drawings, specification and related documentation.
Comfortable working with architects, developers, other design professionals and customers/end-users.
Ability to present complex issues/date with high level of clarity and impact.
